In order to increase meritocracy, Italy and Spain have introduced a system of centralized competitions which requires potential candidates to Associate or Full Professor positions to qualify in a national competition held at the discipline level. We examine the design of these evaluations and we analyze empirically the role of information asymmetries and the impact of personal connections.
